Formspring Friday: Why No Pictures?

Why don’t you ever have any pictures on your blog?

There are two reasons, actually. The first is that I don’t want this blog to be about pictures. The second is that I don’t feel any compulsion to spend time looking for pictures to post.

Eye candy is great, but I just don’t need it on my blog. I’ve heard a number of other bloggers say that they always get a lot of hits on the days they post pictures of themselves or pictures of people they find hot, but that those visitors don’t engage much with the rest of the content. If all people are coming for is to see pictures, then the sheer number of other blogs out there dedicated to pictures or which sometimes have pictures is more than enough to satisfy those needs. I simply have no desire to feed that beast because it wouldn’t even be original, they would be pictures I link to from elsewhere.

I suppose I don’t have to have posts featuring hot people, but I could in theory occasionally incorporate a picture into a post. But here I’m indifferent. Like I said in the Formspring Friday post on porn, I’ve never been all that into watching porn, and I’ve also never been into looking through pictures of hot people just for the sake of looking. If that appealed to me, then I wouldn’t mind combing through pictures to find something to share here every once in awhile, but that just isn’t the case. I’d end up taking the first picture that seemed remotely appealing to me just so I could go do other things instead.

I’m not saying I won’t ever see or take erotic pictures that I want to share, but I really wouldn’t hold my breath.

  1. I’ve moved away from putting that many pictures on my blog, mainly because – well, because my blog is about me, about my writing. Once in a while, a picture helps me tell my story, but increasingly infrequently.

At the same time, I have a prolific Tumblr, the purpose of which is to share what I find hot with folks, to share my tastes, and perhaps also to turn them on.

Thanks for writing so thoughtfully on the subject.

    1. I like how you occasionally incorporate pictures into your stories. I haven’t ever checked out your tumblr, but that’s because I never check anyone’s out. I dunno, sometimes my indifference towards browsing through pictures strikes me as odd, but even in those moments I can’t motivate myself to do it. I’m just more turned on by what people write. It could be that the person or thing that turned you on doesn’t turn me on, but I can still be turned on by the story of what you did because you were turned on.

Hell, back when I played online RPGs I even preferred the text-based games to the others. I never really thought about that connection till now…
