St. Valentine’s Day

I know, I know, I said I’d be posting a lot of stuff about love, but life gets in the way sometimes. First, I got swamped with a large translation project that I had to power through. And for part of the time I was working on the translation I was in Berlin, trying to balance working in the day with going out at night.

But perhaps the biggest problem has been the nature of the particular post I’m working on. In the film Playing by Heart, Angelina Jolie tells Ryan Phillippe a story about a friend of hers who says, “talking about love is like dancing about architecture.” And when it comes to the post on how I see the various types of love, I’m having difficulty putting my thoughts into words. And I didn’t even really try to work on it while I was swamped with work. But I’ll figure out how to say what I want to say, and then I’ll put it on the site.

But since today is Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d take a minute to talk about that.  I’ve never really been a fan of this particular holiday, if I’m honest. It’s too generally too gushy and too focused on romance for my taste—and that holds true even when I’m in a romantic relationship.

This past week I was looking into the history of the day and learned that it didn’t really have anything to do with romantic love until it was associated with courtly love in the 1400s.  Before that, it was a day to celebrate love, devotion, and affection in general, a day to remember certain saints who sacrificed themselves for others.

And that’s something I can wrap my head around. Not the obsession with romantic love, but true affection, devotion and love between anyone, regardless of the type of love that is the foundation of that affection and devotion. There are a lot of people around the world that I love and for whom I would sacrifice much, and it is all of them I think of today.  To all of them I say have a wonderful day and know that you are loved.

And to all my readers, I wish you all a happy Valentine’s Day as well, and hope you can spend the day with people you love.

And now I’m off for an evening of fun that will commence with the Austria vs. Canada hockey game and dinner. Here we go!
